1. The Crosby Arboretum

Most people wouldn’t think of an arboretum as being a historic attraction. But the Crosby Arboretum was built as a living monument to the work of local figures in forestry and environmentalism.

This great attraction was built in 1978 and visitors can enjoy wandering the scenic paths and learning about plant life and local history at the same time. There are savanna, aquatic, and woodland exhibits. This attraction is open from 9 am to 4:30 PM, Wednesday through Sunday.

2. William Frederick Holmes House

This fine example of Queen-Anne-style architecture is a favorite with local history buffs. The pleasant house, also known as Theosa, has been home to many notable local citizens through the years. Located in McComb, it’s around 90 minutes away from Picayune.

3. Covington County Courthouse

The nearby city of Covington is home to a historic courthouse, built well over a hundred years ago. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991 and recognized for hosting many famous trials and for its distinct architecture.

4. Magnolia Station

Magnolia is another close-by city that is home to some interesting historic sites. One of the most prominent is Magnolia Depot. Once serving as a passenger and freight depot for the Illinois Central Railroad, the depot is an important memory of the days when Magnolia was a resort town, welcoming thousands of visitors each year.

Today, the building serves as Magnolia City Hall. That means it’s open to the public, so there are plenty of opportunities to see inside and outside the building. Magnolia is around a 90-minute drive from Picayune.
